Dry Air
Dry air affects skin by increasing water loss from the outer layer. When humidity is low, moisture evaporates from the skin more quickly than it can be replaced, which increases transepidermal water loss. This is a well established finding in skin physiology research and is consistently observed in controlled low humidity environments such as deserts and heated indoor spaces.
Over time, this can leave skin feeling tight, rough, or visibly dry. The skin's surface barrier can become less efficient at holding water when exposed to prolonged dry conditions, which makes it easier for discomfort and flaking to appear, especially in people who already have sensitive or compromised skin.
